How much does it cost to import a car to Ghana?
Build a complete budget before bidding or buying. The vehicle price, shipping, Customs assessment and local costs each need their own line in your plan.
There is no single landed price for every car
Begin with a specific listing or vehicle, a departure location and a freight quote. A budget for one car cannot be carried straight over to another with a different value, condition or shipment arrangement. Record the currency of every charge and the exchange rate used to compare the totals in Ghana cedis.
Seven costs to include in your import budget
| Budget item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Vehicle purchase | The agreed auction bid or seller price. Keep the invoice and currency with the quote. |
| Auction and purchase fees | Buyer, broker or payment charges. Ask whether these are already included in the quoted purchase total. |
| Transport to the departure port | Collection, storage and inland delivery. The car’s location and whether it moves under its own power can affect the quote. |
| Freight and insurance | The shipment quote and cover for the journey. Confirm what the insurance covers and which charges the freight quote excludes. |
| Customs assessment | Duties, taxes and applicable levies. Treat a calculator result as a planning estimate until your assessment is available. |
| Local handling and clearance | Shipping-line, terminal, storage and agent charges. Ask about the quoted clearance period and costs if collection is delayed. |
| After release | Local delivery, repairs, inspection and registration arrangements. Keep these separate from the Customs estimate. |
Worked example: separate CIF from the final budget
CIF stands for cost, insurance and freight. Consider this illustrative scenario using an entered vehicle value; it is a budgeting example, not a vehicle quote or official Customs valuation.
- Entered vehicle value
- USD 8,000
- Freight
- USD 1,500
- Insurance
- USD 100
- CIF in this scenario
- USD 9,600
- Illustrative reference exchange rate
- GHS 12 per USD (not a live rate)
- Converted CIF
- GHS 115,200
The GHS 115,200 is the converted shipment value for this scenario. Add the Customs assessment and any expenses outside those three entered values to build your full budget. Avoid counting freight or insurance twice if they are already included in a quote.
You can enter these values in the Ghana car import duty calculator to explore the tool's assumptions. Your vehicle's actual Customs valuation and applicable rules may produce a different result.
Compare quotes on the same basis
Confirm eligibility before comparing prices. An overage penalty does not override a vehicle prohibition. Following the 5 October inspection suspension, confirm any inspection or conformity charge with GSA rather than adding an old advertised fee automatically.
- Ask each provider to use the same vehicle, shipment destination and included services.
- Mark every item as included, excluded or awaiting confirmation. An empty line should not be treated as zero.
- Ask which prices are fixed, which are estimates and how long the quote is valid.
- Keep a separate reserve for condition-related repairs or changes in shipping and local charges.
- Confirm who handles the paperwork, payments, port collection and delivery.
Check official rules before committing
GRA's vehicle importation guidance explains vehicle valuation, classification and additional charges. Confirm the current assessment for your vehicle with Customs or a clearing agent. The guidance and calculator here support planning; they do not set the amount payable.
