Documents for importing a car to Ghana
Organise your vehicle, shipment and Customs paperwork before shipping. Use this checklist to prepare a conversation with your seller, shipping provider and clearing agent.
Confirm the clearance requirements with your agent
GRA's import procedures list a Bill of Lading or waybill, attested invoice, packing list, Import Declaration Form and TIN or GhanaCard PIN, alongside permits where required. Ask your agent how these requirements apply to your vehicle and shipment, including any vehicle-specific paperwork.
Retain manufacture and condition records for eligibility checks, plus dated shipment evidence if claiming the pre-1 October 2026 exemption. GSA's pre-shipment inspection is suspended as of 5 October; confirm current conformity paperwork with GSA rather than assuming the older Certificate of Conformance process is still mandatory before shipment.
Prepare three sets of records
1. Purchase and vehicle records
Request the invoice, available title or ownership documents and the vehicle's VIN or chassis number from the seller. Save the listing and condition information you used to decide on the purchase. Ask which original documents must travel with or ahead of the vehicle.
2. Shipment records
Keep the Bill of Lading, shipping booking and insurance paperwork together. Review the consignee details, vehicle identification, loading and destination information against the purchase records. Resolve any mismatch before the shipment is due for clearance.
3. Customs and release records
Confirm who will prepare the declaration and which identification details and forms they need. Keep copies of the assessment, payment receipts and release paperwork. Ask which records you will need for collection and subsequent vehicle registration.
Questions to resolve before the car leaves
- Do the VIN and vehicle description match across the seller's and shipper's records?
- Is the consignee correctly named, and who is authorised to arrange clearance?
- Who holds each original document, and how will it reach the person handling clearance?
- Are any extra approvals required for this vehicle's configuration or condition?
- What remains outstanding, who will supply it, and when is it needed?
Keep a folder of readable copies and a list of the people responsible for each missing item. Share only the identification details needed with the service provider handling that step.
Understand the assessment and release stage
GRA describes a declaration through ICUMS followed by classification, valuation and approval. The resulting assessment determines the duties to pay before the relevant examination and release steps. Confirm the current process with your agent and use official payment instructions.
An online duty estimate is useful for a budget, but it cannot replace the declaration, assessment or release documents. For a planning breakdown, use the Auto Duty Checker Ghana and read the complete import budget guide.
